GATE Score Calculation Formula
GATE score is computed using a standard formula that maps your marks to a scaled score. Below is the official formula, variable definitions, and a worked example.
Score Calculation Formula
Official GATE score normalization formula.
$$
\text{Score} = S_q + (S_t - S_q) \times \frac{M - M_q}{M_t - M_q}
$$
Use paper-specific values for \( M_q \) and \( M_t \)
Variable Definitions
-
\( M \) — Normalized marks obtained by the candidate
Example: \( M = 26.00 \)
-
\( M_t \) — Average marks of top performers
Example: \( M_t = 75.01 \)
-
\( M_q \) — Qualifying marks threshold
Example: \( M_q = 37.10 \)
-
\( S_q \) — Qualifying score (typically 350)
Example: \( S_q = 350 \)
-
\( S_t \) — Top score (typically 900–1000)
Example: \( S_t = 900 \)
Worked Example
Substituting sample values into the formula:
$$
350 + (900 - 350) \times \frac{26.00 - 37.10}{75.01 - 37.10}
$$
This example is illustrative. Always use official paper-wise statistics.
Subject Statistics (Example)
| Statistic | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | 25.14 | Average marks of all candidates |
| Standard Deviation | 13.62 | Marks distribution spread |
| Top Performer Marks | 75.01 | Top 0.1% candidates |
